Cracow szopka or nativity scene (crib, crèche) is a Christmas tradition originating from Cracow, Poland, and dating back to the 19th century. An unusual and characteristic feature of the szopka is the use of historical buildings of Kraków as a backdrop of the scenery.

The Christmas creche is common to all of the Christian faith, but the szopka is unique to Poland. The szopka, once a humble peasant pleasure, has become a recognized Polish institution. A truly Polish Christmas celebration is not complete without some form of this scene.
The ornate structures can be two meters high and three meters wide. The classic Cracovian szopka looks more like the kind of coloured castle that you find in a Russian fairy tale. Nevertheless, the artists draw on distinctly local features for their inspiration - the towers of St. Mary's Church, the Barbican, Wawel Cathedral - all these are recurrent motifs.
Cracow szopka are put on display in the Main Square from the first Thursday of December to the end of February.
The other big attraction in Cracow before Christmas is Traditional Christmas Market. Bustling fair on the Main Market Square, specializing in traditional hand-made Christmas decorations from Cracow. The fair is supported by carol concerts and presentations based on Christmas traditions. This year it lasts from 1st of December till 24th of December.
