Koniaków is among the most interesting centres of folk art in Poland. The tradition of over 200 years of lace making attracts tourists who wish to purchase the beautiful and delicate products.
Koniaków is situated in the mountain region of Beskid Śląski, at a mountain peak nearly naturally detached from the world. As early as from 19th century, women have been crocheting openwork tablecloths, bed linen inserts and wedding dresses. For years now the handcrafts originating in the Beskid region have decorated tables, chests of drawers, church altars and even royal or presidential offices.
Also at the moment, nearly each house in Koniaków is engaged in the tradition of manual crochet to create small works of art. Recently, the young generation of lace makers expanded the range of products to include women’s lingerie, which became enormously popular. Lace g-strings are among the world best known products of Koniaków.
Foreign visitors are in awe to find that lace makers of Koniaków use only crochet hooks and the manner of making the products is traditional and has not changed for generations.
